COR IMMACULATA MARIAE

COR IMMACULATA MARIAE
Oil on cradled canvas
4’ x 3’
November 27 – December 16, 2018

In this painting of Mary as Inang Bayan, the CICM coat of arms is superimposed on her bodice with the symbol of her Immaculate Heart in the middle of her chest. The shape of the coat of arms is echoed by the shape of the stranded sampaguitas on a background of sinamay, or woven abaca, behind her.

This painting was designed to hang at the entrance to the library.

_Saint Louis_

Saint Louis
Oil on cradled canvas
4’ x 4’
October 30 – November 24, 2018

This portrait of Saint Louis (pronounced by Father Richard as "LEW-iss" rather than "LEW-ee", as I habitually pronounce the name) features a youth gazing on a cross of pine twigs. In the background are pieces of fabric made of hand-woven Igorot cloth. Instead of the white Easter lilies traditionally associated with Aloysius Gonzaga is a garland of everlasting flowers. The surplice also bears a strawberry design.
The spears behind the youth represent the four, Saint Louis educational institutions owned and operated by CICM: Saint Louis University in Baguio, University of Saint Louis in Tuguegarao, Saint Louis College in La Union, and Saint Louis College in Cebu.
In this rendition, the youth are called to give up their warrior’s loincloths and contemplate the cross, at the same time being true to their ethnicity.
I am told that Dr. Agnes Brazal, my former professor in Systematic Theology, conducted research on the matter of "Saint Louis" (a Jesuit saint, not a CICM saint) and concluded that the saint in question is actually Saint Louise de Marillac. Other than that Saint Louise was French, however, I could find no further connection between her and the congregation.

_Night Walker: Studies In Multiple Perspective_

Night Walker: Studies In Multiple Perspective
Tony Perez
New Works In Oil

I see rainbows even in darkness.

When I was 18 I loved roaming the streets of Cubao at night, taking in the lights and the shadows, marveling at how colors look different from what they do in the daytime, passing by workers closing up shop, listening to their conversations and their dreams, merging with the district before going home and processing my observations in the privacy of my own room.

In this exhibit I revisit those nights and see how "closing time" can also mean "retirement" for myself and my former classmates of 4-F Elans, which celebrates its 50th year. It is an exciting time in life because the night never shows up treasures and surprises until someone shines light on them.

Most of these paintings depict scenes from my neighborhood, in Cubao. It is the height of the Philippine summer, and people are switching from incandescents to fluorescents to dispel the heat and generate the kind of brightness they can work by, and read by, and write by, and paint by, and see themselves all the better by.

I walk the night. Come, walk with me.
